Public Works

The Department of Public Works, Water and Sewer Department have the most frequent contact with the Village residents. We are very fortunate to have such a courteous, friendly and helpful staff to provide the following services for the Village residents:

1. Village Streets

DPW maintains the Village streets, including repairs, repaving, street cleaning, snow plowing and removal and street sign maintenance.

2. Refuse and Recycling

The Village refuse and recycling is contracted out to an independent contractor, which is arranged by the Village. The collection of refuse and recycling is done on Wednesday mornings. Each unit is provided with 1 refuse can and 1 recycling can. The residents are billed 4 times a year for the cost of refuse and recycling.

3. Leaf, Lawn Clippings, etc.

This is a 3 season service provided by DPW, which starts in April. All leaves, weeds and lawn clippings should be placed in biodegradable bags and placed at the curb for pick up on Mondays. DPW opens the Brickyard every other Saturday, starting in April through June, then again in October through November, from 8:00 to 12:00 for disposal of tree limbs, branches and leaves. Beginning on the third week of October and ending on the first week of December, residents are allowed to rake all leaves to the curb and DPW will vacuum up the leaves. They also will pick up Christmas Trees, if left at the curb on the first two Mondays of the New Year. Be sure to check the calendar for the exact dates.

4. Village Wide Cleanup

One Saturday during the month of May and one Saturday during the month of September, the Brickyard is open for Village residents to bring any items they wish to dispose of as long as it is not Hazardous Waste or construction debris. They also accept any electronics for recycling. There is a fee for drop off, with additional fees added for specific items.  Information about each Clean Up Day is posted in The Castletonian Newsletter found https://www.castleton-on-hudson.org/resident-information/page/castletonian-newsletters.

5. Village Property

DPW maintains all of the Village property, which includes mowing, watering Village flowers, trimming trees and tree removal when necessary. They also handle the hanging of seasonal decorations.

6. Water and Sewer

DPW maintains and repairs all water mains and sewer lines, along with maintaining catch basins and storm sewers. During the months of May and September, on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays, from 9:00 to 12:00 DPW does hydrant flushing. DPW reads all of the water meters to calculate usage and also performs repairs or replaces any broken meters.

7.  Snow Emergency Policy

For North Main Street: Park on the west side of the street (the River side).

For South Main Street:  While it is snowing, park on the east side of the street (The Store side); once the snow stops, move to the west side.

All Other Village Residents: We use the odd/even system so that the plows don’t have to zig-zag in and out of parked cars on both sides of the street. On odd days we ask that you NOT park on the odd side of the street. On even days we ask that you NOT park on the even side of the street. If you live at a dead end, please do not use that space for parking so the plows can push the snow to the end of the street.  During a snow emergency, there is NO parking on any of the hills in the Village. This includes Stimpson Avenue, Green Avenue, Scott Avenue and Seaman Avenue. If you do not have a driveway  you can park at one of the following locations:

Sacred Heart Church on Stimpson Avenue

Trinity Lutheran Church on Green Avenue

Behind the fire house

The two Village-owned parking lots of South Main Street.   One is across from the post office next to M&M Auto and the other is across from The Store.
